Import CSV Plugin

Autodesk Alias® Plugin to import 3d Points in a CSV (Comma Sperated Value) file. 

CMM (coordinate measuring machines) are used in many automotive studios, to make cross-section data of physical models. These are stored as raw x,y,z values and can be exported as a CSV file. 

Currently, there is no easy method to transfer such data into Alias. Although Alias can import CSV file as a point cloud, it is not very easy to visualize sparse data. The plug-in will import the points and connect them using polylines. By choosing an angle , the resulting polylines can be broken at the retract steps or sudden change in curvature.

Getting Started:

ImportCSV Plugin

  • Open the Plugin Manager

  • Please select

    ImportCSV_2024_1 for Alias 2024.1 or newer
    ImportCSV_2021_3 for Alias 2021.3 to Alias 2023.1
    ImportCSV for older versions of Alias.

  • Select the Auto Load option to automatically load the plugin the next time Alias starts.
  • The plugin will be installed under File->Import menu, as Import CSV

Usage:

Click on Import CSV to import the contents of the point file into the current stage.
A Polyline is created, connecting the 3D points defined in the file.

Prerequisites for 64 bit:

requires Windows 7 or newer.
Autodesk Alias 64bit
VC++ runtime. Download here

Known Issues:

Limitation: Only ASCI point data in CSV is supported. No support for binary data.
Might run out of memory if the point file size is very large.
